About
We know being in high school is hard. Being a girl in high school is really hard. You’re making all kinds of important decisions– from what you want to do after high school to what you want to do this weekend. Some of the most important decisions you’re making, though, are about the kind of person you want to be and the kind of people you want to be around. Part of what makes these choices so hard is that you’re facing lots of pressure from lots of different places that are all trying to tell you what the answer is– magazines, music, tv, and even your friends.
That’s where we come in. Sometimes it’s hard to even see the different pressure around you when you’re so surrounded by them. We want to show you some of these influences that might not be the best for helping you become the beautiful, independent, intelligent woman that we know you are, and to give you some tips on how to overcome them. Maybe you’ve already noticed some of these negative messages and don’t know what to do about it. We have lots of ideas!
The Big Sister started out as a zine of the Greensboro, NC Women’s Collective. Lots of our friends from all over the country got excited about the idea and sent in stories, and it seemed like we should make it accessible to people all over. This is stuff we wish someone had told us in high school!
We’re real people and we want to help in any way we can. Please let us know what we can do. Send us your stories, your questions, your artwork, anything! See our Submissions page for information on how to do so. We want to be your big sisters!
